- Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart (1958) — The richest literary portrait of precolonial and early colonial Igbo culture. The starting point.
- Chinua Achebe, Arrow of God (1964) — The most philosophically profound literary treatment of Igbo religious and political culture. Read after Things Fall Apart.
- Flora Nwapa, Efuru (1966) — Centres Igbo women's lives and the Uhamiri (lake goddess) tradition. Essential corrective to the male-dominated Achebe canon.
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Purple Hibiscus (2003) — Contemporary Igbo family life, religious change, and the post-war generation.
- Christopher Okigbo, Labyrinths (1971) — The collected poetry of the greatest Igbo poet. Demanding and rewarding.
Ethnographic and Anthropological Studies
- Victor Uchendu, The Igbo of Southeast Nigeria (1965) — Standard introductory anthropological account written by an Igbo scholar. Foundational.
- M.M. Green, Igbo Village Affairs (1947) — One of the earliest and most detailed ethnographic studies of Igbo community life. Colonial-era but valuable for detail.
- Simon Ottenberg, Masked Rituals of Afikpo (1975) — The definitive study of Igbo masquerade tradition. Essential for understanding Mmanwu.
- Phoebe Ottenberg, Afikpo: The Resurgence of a Culture (2005) — Detailed study of Afikpo Igbo cultural life and its contemporary revival.
Art and Visual Culture
- Herbert Cole & Chike Aniakor, Igbo Arts: Community and Cosmos (1984) — The most comprehensive survey of Igbo visual art. Published to accompany a major UCLA exhibition.
- Simon Ottenberg, New Traditions from Nigeria: Seven Artists of the Nsukka Group (1997) — On the Nsukka School and its development of natural synthesis.
- Chike Aniakor, various essays on Uli and Igbo visual tradition — Available in Nigerian art journals. The most detailed treatment of Uli as an art form.

- John Collins, West African Pop Roots (1992) — The history of highlife and related genres, including Igbo musical contributions.
- Chief Osita Osadebe, discography (1960s-2000s) — The recordings themselves are the primary source. Available on streaming platforms.
Language and Oral Tradition
- Romanus Egudu & Donatus Nwoga, Poetic Heritage: Igbo Traditional Verse (1971) — Collection and translation of Igbo oral poetry.
